  • Nepenthes alata is a robust growing carnivorous tropical pitcher plant with pitchers that can reach 8" in size, primarily green in color, but with hints of red tint + speckles.

This species is heat tolerant, doing well in household conditions, greenhouses, and outdoors in summer. Humidity is usually the biggest factor for success with this type of plant - ideally humidity is >60%, but can be managed in lower humidity if watered appropriately. Also a candidate for a large terrarium or enclosure- not recommended for small amphibian enclosures as pitchers may end of up catching one for dinner... Light: Part shade to part sun or strong artificial lighting. Water quality is very important- usually recommended to water with rain, RO, or distilled waters as they can be sensitive to salts. Fertilize in the active growth months - usually I utilize fertilizer pellets- drop one in one of the pitchers every now and then, but some growers will place some fish flakes into the pitchers instead as their fertilizer/food source. Overall a good beginner Nepenthes.

     Species or hybrid?

Technically species, but rumored that most "alata" in cultivation are a sort of hybrid - I have to defer to my carnivorous plant friends for a more definite answer
